Kroger: Diabetes Destination
The Kroger Co., a socially responsible grocery chain with more than 1,900 pharmacies across the country, became a National Diabetes Goal Champion in March. Kroger strives to provide a diabetes destination in its pharmacies, where customers can be screened for diabetes, learn about the disease and treatment options and receive support for adopting a healthy lifestyle. As a Goal Champion, Kroger is committed to improving the lives of its customers, employees and members of the local community who have or are affected by diabetes.
In its stores, Kroger’s signature initiative has been providing free health screenings, including a blood glucose test, for customers. Kroger is also dedicated to helping its employees take better control of their health and learn healthy behaviors, and is continually updating and improving its services to the community. The company has developed partnerships with employer groups to decrease health care costs by coaching employees about diabetes, and offers in-store “food tours” with dietitians to advise customers on healthier food choices. In Cincinnati, Ohio, employees covered under the consolidated health care benefit plan with diabetes receive consultations with Kroger pharmacists to develop personalized treatment programs. This program has been so successful that it has been implemented in Kentucky and Arizona.
Kroger prides itself as being a community-focused organization. The company is excited to be a part of the National Diabetes Goal, and looks forward to sharing information about the Goal with customers, employees and the communities it serves.
